Orton-Gillingham Class Descriptions

These classes are co-sponsored by Orton-Gillingham of MN and Hamline University. There are four levels of the class as described below.

FALL 2010
Orton-Gillingham Teacher Training classes
Level 1 and Level 2, Lecture and Practicum
When: Saturday, Oct. 9 and Saturday, Oct. 16,
    9 AM until 3:30 PM
    and Tuesdays, Oct. 12 through Dec. 7,
    5:30 PM until 9 PM
Where: Groves Academy, St. Louis Park, MN
Cost: $750. Scholarships are available.
Teacher registration forms and scholarships are now available.

Orton-Gillingham 1, Lecture and Practicum

Level 1 covers skills for teaching beginning reading, spelling and and handwriting (up to 4th grade level), focusing on sounds, rules, phonemic awareness, lesson planning, and teaching strategies.

Course & Materials Fee: $750

Optional Graduate Credit. Additional fee payable during the class.

Orton-Gillingham 2, Lecture and Practicum

Level 2 covers skills for teaching reading, spelling and writing (up to 7th grade level), focusing on sounds, rules, syllable types, syllable division, affixes, three ending rules and lesson planning. Please bring all materials from Orton-Gillingham 1. Prerequisite: Orton-Gillingham 1 and 100 hours of practice.

Course & Materials Fee: $750

Optional Graduate Credit. Additional fee payable during the class.

Orton-Gillingham 3, Lecture and Practicum

Level 3 covers advanced language structure (upper elementary level through adult) including orthography and case studies. Teachers plan, present, and evaluate instructional sequences for individuals or groups of students. Prerequisite: Levels 1 and 2.

Course & Materials Fee: $750

Optional Graduate Credit. Additional fee payable during the class.

Orton-Gillingham 4, Lecture and Practicum

Level 4 continues the training techniques taught in Orton-Gillingham level 3 with the focus on advanced learning structure. Teachers plan, present,and evaluate instructional sequences for individuals or groups of students. Prerequisite: Levels 1, 2 and 3

Course & Materials Fee: $750

Optional Graduate Credit. Additional fee payable during the class.

Additional Information:

  • These courses are open to teachers, tutors, parents, and others interested in multi-sensory language instruction.
  • A class confirmation with directions will be sent.
  • Refund policy: $100 fee for cancellations after the registration deadline. No refunds for cancellations on or after the first day of class.
  • Credit registration will be taken on the first day of class. 3 Semester Continuing Ed Graduate Credits. Additional fee payable during the class
  • Certificate given for maximum 45 hours of course work for each class.
  • Participants with no previous Orton-Gillingham training need to start with Level 1, regardless of the age of students with whom you plan to work.
  • If you are unable to attend all sessions, please consider registering for Summer 2011 classes.
